Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground on 17th Home

On Saturday13340053_1060987123992906_8410988610645947514_o, June 4, Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the beginning of construction on its latest new home build for Marjorie and her two children. This is the affiliate’s seventeenth new home and the fourth home to be built in Manitou Park as part of ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts. Members of the community, including Mayor Amato of Berkeley Township, Reverend Doctor William A. Greene of the First Baptist Church and Councilman Jim Byrnes, joined Habitat staff, volunteers and partner families for the occasion.

The home will be built on a donated lot from Berkeley Township. “On behalf of the Township, we are excited to play a small role in Habitat’s mission of providing good, affordable homes for deserving families,” Mayor Amato shared. “I wish to congratulate Habitat for moving forward with the construction of another home for a very deserving family.” Under Mayor Amato’s leadership, the township also donated funding through Berkeley’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

Northern Ocean Habitat prides itself on being a hand-up, not a hand-out. “The idea is to put hardworking families into affordable housing,” said Executive Director, Suzan Fichtner. Selected families must partner with Northern Ocean Habitat to qualify to purchase the home.  As part of Habitat’s requirements, Marjorie and her family will work alongside numerous donors, volunteers and staff on the construction site of her home, as well as perform additional partnership requirements.
