Critical Home Repairs Make a Lasting Impact

Our Critical Home Repair program is one of the few outlets Ocean County homeowners have when home maintenance becomes a financial and physical hardship. We are proud to be an organization that focuses on health and safety, performing needed repairs that allow our community members to remain in and afford a home that means the world to them. In fiscal year ’24, with the help of our partners and volunteers, we provided 63 households with a hand-up. Below are a few stories from our homeowners that we’d like to share with you.

Our goal this fiscal year is to serve 85 households. Join us and be part of the effort in creating a stronger, safer community. Donations big or small can mean the difference of a safe home for a family or individual. Click HERE to donate.

Impact Stories

Darlene of Toms River

Darlene is a 65-year-old who is the widow of a Marine Corps veteran. She loves Ocean County and is very involved with helping her neighbors and distributing food from the food pantry. Darlene injured her back while working years ago and reached out to Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity concerned about her bathtub. Not only did our team perform a tub-to-shower conversion, but repaired her deck and replaced the roof!

Steve of Toms River

While shopping at our ReStore, Steve was referred to our critical home repair program. He’s lived in his home for 15 years and expressed concern about his broken back deck and drafty windows. Northern Ocean Habitat was able to repair the back deck, replace the front steps, and replace the bay windows.

“I haven’t been able to sit on my deck in 5 years and now I can. The windows were so drafty and I’m so grateful for all you did. The volunteers really know they’re stuff and could do all the repairs. I’m so happy that my house is back together.” – Steven

Sue of Whiting

Sue has lived in her home for over 20 years. She always has a positive attitude and her favorite hobby is cross-stitch. She reached out to Northern Ocean Habitat looking for assistance with electrical issues and a serious water leak under her home. Running water could be heard upon entering and the floor and wall had visible damage. Our team repaired the leak, installed vinyl plank flooring, and repaired the breaker in the service panel.

John and Debbie of Brick

John and Debbie are both in their 70s and have been married for 53 years. They raised 4 children in Ocean County and have been living in their Brick home for 16 years. They came to Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity when their homeowner’s insurance gave them issues about their damaged roof. Our team went to John and Debbie’s home and replaced the entire roof which has been a hardship for years.

“Financially, we couldn’t have done this ourselves. We had a leak and it was a blessing to have our roof repaired. Everyone at Habitat was so friendly and we couldn’t be happier,” Debbie.
