Katiria’s Story

Consider partnering with Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity as we embark on our 20th home build in 2020 and join us in giving another family hope.

In 2017 Katiria and her daughters, Kamiah and Izabella received Northern Ocean Habitat’s 18th home. Prior, the family had been renting an apartment in Section 8 Housing while she worked as a Certified Nurse’s Aid struggling to make ends meet. When she learned of Habitat’s mission, she told her girls about the possibility of having a home of their own.

Disappointment

Unfortunately, after meeting with program services, Katiria discovered she did not meet the financial requirements to afford a mortgage. However, she did not give up. Katiria continued her education, landed a better job, and reapplied several years later.

Perseverance

Hopeful this time, Katiria rushed home to complete the required application. After thumbing through the extensive process, she became overwhelmed and questioned, “Why should I think Habitat for Humanity would give me a home?” Despairingly, she slid the application beneath her bed and told the girls she had lost it. Izabella saw the application peeking from under the bed and urged her mother to complete it. That evening Katiria stayed up late until she checked every box and answered all the questions.

Today, Katiria and her girls are thriving. She says, “My life has changed tremendously. I no longer stress or worry about home leases, and my children are happy and safe.”
