Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity Celebrates Women Build Week

Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity, with support from Wells Fargo, devoted the week before Mother’s Day — May 4 to May 11, 2019 — to Women Build events.

Women Build serves to educate and inspire women to build, and to advocate for decent and affordable houses for all their neighbors—making a difference in their community, one nail at a time.

Northern Ocean Habitat was blessed to kick-off Women Build week this year with women faculty and staff from Donovan Catholic High School and St. Joseph Grade School in Toms River.  Dressed in pink “She Nailed It” shirts, the team went to work to clean up and clean out overgrown brush and shrubs for homeowners Bill and Barbara. The couple lives in a modest senior community in Brick and Barbara is severely disabled and confined to a hospital bed.

Later that week, volunteers from Wells Fargo not only constructed a shed at Northern Ocean Habitat’s new-build site in Bayville, but raked, cleared and graded the lawn area to get it ready for seeding. Habitat’s latest new home, the 19th built since our founding in 1999, will provide decent safe housing for Gloria, a single mother with two young daughters.

At the final Women Build scheduled event, Northern Ocean Habitat’s own women staffers put a fresh coat of paint on the home exterior for Anna, a widow living in a 55-and-over housing development in Toms River.

 

Women and children, in the U.S. and across the globe, are the populations most likely to be affected by poor living conditions. Women Build Week encourages women to devote at least one day to help promote decent and affordable housing in their local communities, addressing the problem of affordable housing in a concrete way so that families can achieve stability and independence through safe, decent and affordable homes.
