On behalf of our Habitat community, we’d like to honor the life and legacy of President Jimmy Carter, whose dedication to building a better world through Habitat for Humanity touched countless lives. His compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to service will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, President Carter — your impact will live on in the homes you’ve helped build and the hearts you’ve inspired.

early days of jimmy and rosalynn

In March 1984, President and Mrs. Carter worked with Habitat in Americus, Georgia. They quickly realized that Habitat’s mission closely aligned with their values, and a partnership was formed. Just a few months later, in September of that same year, the Carters led a Habitat for Humanity work group to New York, serving 19 families in need of safe, affordable housing. That was the inaugural Carter Work Project.

Since 1984, the Carter Work Project has touched lives around the world by inspiring more than 108,000 volunteers to help build, renovate and repair 4,447 homes in 14 countries.
