Northern Ocean Habitat and Thrivent Financial Partner to Help Improve Lives of Northern Ocean County Residents

TOMS RIVER, N.J. –   Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Thrivent Financial to support Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, an ongoing partnership between Habitat and Thrivent Financial, which helps families in the U.S. and across the globe obtain strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.

Locally, the program will fund the repairs of five homes in northern Ocean County through the Thrivent Build Repairs program, which allows Habitat to make repairs to existing homes in partnership with families who lack the resources or ability to make the repairs themselves.

On Friday, August 25, volunteers from Habitat and Thrivent Financial joined forces to do repair work on the home of Peter, a Toms River resident, as part of Northern Ocean Habitat’s A Brush with Kindness repair program. The home’s back deck was rotting and in disrepair, making it dangerous and unusable. In addition, the debris around and under the deck was serving as potential harborage and breeding ground for animals, rodents and vermin. A storage shed was also in a serious state of disrepair and needed to be repaired, removed or replaced.

With the help of Thrivent, Northern Ocean Habitat demolished the back deck and removed all surrounding brush. Additionally, the shed roof was removed and the sheathing and shingles were replaced. Brushes and weeds were trimmed and removed and loose siding was reattached.

“It’s not only rewarding but extremely humbling, to say the least, that all these people would show up to help me.,” shared Peter. “I can’t thank Northern Ocean Habitat enough for their kindness, generosity and love shown to me not only from the organization, but from all the volunteers that came over and gave their time.”

“It is inspiring to work alongside Habitat families, Thrivent members and other volunteers to build and repair homes,” said Brian Mccaskill, a Financial Associate with Thrivent Financial. “Sharing our time and talents to live generously and strengthen our community is a great way to get to know our neighbors and make a real difference.”
